Acrocanthosaurus was an Allosaurid theropod dinosaur of the early Cretaceous period in North America, with a particularly tall spine column, giving it a similar appearance to the Spinosaurids of the same time period. Unlike Spinosaurids, who were riverine hunters with semi-aquatic hunting behaviours, Acrocanthosaurus was a heavy built predator that preferred slow moving prey and carrion over other meat. Foot prints of Acrocanthosaurus can been seen publicly in Glen Rose, Texas. A complete skeleton is on display in Idabel, Oklahoma.

Jurassic Park Series

Acrocanthosaurus hasn't appeared in the novels of Crichton or the movies, but the creature does appear in many Jurassic Park inspired games.

Jurassic Park inspired games

  • Acrocanthosaurus appears in Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis, as a four-star large carnivore. It is often used in carnivore dominance duels, in which the character playing the game pits two large carnivores against each other in a high-stakes fight over territory. Females, at least, are highly territorial. Acrocanthosaurus can coexist and become friendly with another 4-star carnivore, Carcharodontosaurus, as shown on its page. This maybe because both Acrocanthosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus are carcharodontosaurids.
  • Acrocanthosaurus is featured in the DVD game Jurassic Park: Explorer. A player earns a dinosaur when he/she wins a minigame, when the earned dinosaur is an Acrocanthosaurus this video will be shown.

Trivia

  • Acrocanthosaurus was once classified as a Spinosaurid. It is now classified as a Carcharodontosaurid.
  • While most paleontologists agree it was a sail on its back, some theorize it was a hump of fat like that of a camel.
  • The Acrocanthosaurus in JPOG looks similar to the one in Dinosaur King.
  • Despite its favorite prey being Parasaurolophus , the two species were separate in the period stages of the Cretaceous.
