Ian Malcolm was a mathematician who specialized in his own branch of Math, known as "Chaos Theory".

He was one of few hand picked by John Hammond to come to the park. He tried to impress Dr. Sattler. He was injured by a collapsing outhouse and was stepped on by the T-Rex.
In the film he survived the incident with only a leg injury, however in the novel he was reported to have passed away from his injuries (although he was later shown to have survived and took part during the events of The Lost World). John Hammond hated him so much in the film and novel Jurassic Park that he almost didn't care if he probably died.

At some point between the time the left Isla Nublar and the events of Isla Sorna, Malcolm, now a more serious and changed man, attempted to go public about his involvement in the Isla Nublar incident, violating his nondisclosure agreement. John Hammond's nephew, Peter Ludlow attempted to discredit Malcolm, calling him a man that didn't know what he was talking about. This caused him to lose a lot of credibility, with many people mocking him because he was famous for almost getting to be killed by a Tyrannosaurus Rex on Isla Nublar rather than his occupation as chaos theorist.
Hammond realized that he can only trust Malcolm to stop his greedy and manipulative nephew Peter Ludlow, who gains control of InGen to build a San Diego Zoo replica of the island Isla Nublar. Malcolm did not actually agree to go because Hammond had disrespected him for no reason, but he only went to Isla Sorna to fetch Sarah Harding and leave immediately.
