Eli Mills was a major antagonist of the Jurassic Park franchise, serving as the main antagonist of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the unseen overarching antagonist of Season 3 of the Netflix spin-off Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, and a posthumous antagonist of Jurassic World: Dominion.

He was a businessman who was in charge of the Lockwood Estate's fortune on behalf of Sir Benjamin Lockwood. Mills secretly sought to save the dinosaurs from Isla Nublar in order to sell them to the highest bidders and also backed the creation of the Indoraptor, a weaponized prototype hybrid dinosaurs that Mills sought to be the start of further dinosaur weapons. However his plans were thwarted by members of the Dinosaur Protection Group who freed the dinosaurs and Mills himself was later killed and eaten by Rexy.

Mills was portrayed on screen by English actor Rafe Spall.

Personality[]

Mills was shown to be a businessman who, above all else, was accepting of his actions as being evil. Rather than justifying his actions by claiming he was morally good, Mills openly expressed and acknowledged his actions to be considered evil. Befitting a sociopath, Mills uses other people's past mistakes or faults to absolve himself of any responsibility for his actions, such as when he pointed out Claire and Owen's actions in the 2015 incident inadvertently endangered others, not recognizing their more moral intentions compared to his evil intentions. Before he was about to murder Lockwood, he even stated he was guilty like him for his mistakes with cloning, again refusing to acknowledge his victims better intentions. However, his own actions are so poorly thought out that he pretty much embodies everything he claimed to hate.[1]

Mills had a particularly speciesist philosophy, since he defends the use of animals in wars such as horses and sees the black market in dinosaurs as the future. He also did not hesitate to torture dinosaurs in his own twisted experiments, as is the case with Blue and the other animals captured on Isla Nublar.[1]

Mills was a polished-looking, well-mannered man from high society, and when interacting with Claire Dearing, Mills initially projects a façade as a kind and sweet-natured, if a bit awkward, businessman. However, his kind first impression was merely a façade under which he is a classic corrupt businessman: ruthless, backstabbing, cunning, treacherous, manipulative, and deceitful, devoid of all ethics or inhibitions in the pursuit of profit. However, in spite of his villainy, he was a rather ordinary man who was accepting of the reality of making money. However, he is a weak and cowardly, yet deranged and childish, man devoid of reality itself.[1]

He described himself as "young and idealistic" when first hired by Lockwood, and was chosen for this reason. However years of managing Lockwood's fortune and overall getting older seemed to have changed his former idealism into practicality, or so he told himself.[1]

Background[]

Mills went to college and graduated, likely majoring in business and finances. He impressed Sir Benjamin Lockwood, a wealthy philanthropist and the former business partner of John Hammond in creating the technology to clone dinosaurs from ancient DNA. Mills was then brought on board and hired by Benjamin to help manage his vast fortune on his behalf, as Benjamin was advancing in age and his health was in decline. Mills actually met Claire Dearing at said fundraiser.[1]

Mills lived at the Lockwood Manor, and there, he befriended Benjamin's young "granddaughter" Maisie Lockwood. Given Mills' age and assertion, he was hired right out of college, and Maisie was likely born around the time of his hiring by Benjamin. Mills was aware of some of the truth of Maisie's origin as a clone of Benjamin's deceased daughter who was (supposedly) killed in a car accident alongside her husband in the 1990s. Even so, Mills was still unaware of Maisie's origins of how she came to be.

In the years following, Mills saw the importance of accepting that the dinosaurs and the cloning technology forever changed the world and could be used for profit. As the protector of Lockwood's fortune, Mills saw the need to expand it by investing in dinosaurs and possible dinosaur weaponry.[1]

After the incident at Jurassic World ,Mills secretly took Wu in and gave him shelter at the Lockwood Manor in order to continue his work creating dinosaurs.[1] To that end, Mills sent him and his mercenaries,[1] including Hawkes and Reed,[2] to smuggle a rib bone of the Indominus rex's remains which Wu used to create "the Indoraptor", a hybrid of the I. rex and Velociraptor which was a prototype that needed to be perfected.[1]

Benjamin also began to see the need to take responsibility for the dinosaurs, and Mills cooperated in helping Lockwood fund an operation to save the dinosaurs after the downfall of Jurassic World from the ensuing eruption of Mount Sibo. Mills' true plan, however, was to secure the dinosaurs for sale and to acquire the Velociraptor Blue, which Wu theorized could be a better template for a perfect obedient Indoraptor. Mills also began plans for hosting an auction to be hosted by a black market dealer named Gunnar Eversol.[1]

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous[]

Season 3[]

Before the events of Mt. Sibo's eruption destroying Isla Nublar, Mills had secretly sent his men to retrieve fossils with tissues of the Indominus rex still intact in order for Wu to replicate his work with the Indoraptor. Six months after the downfall of Jurassic World, Wu went with mercenaries to visit the island. He was mentioned since the campers from the series that were left behind in the island were rescued on the same day Mills sent in his men to retrieve the fossil, with Wu and his mercenaries mentioning his name.[2]

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom[]

Mills first appears in the film as a kind and supportive resident of Benjamin Lockwood's Manor, as he was employed by Benjamin to be entrusted with the mansion. He was also eager to help Claire Dearing with her plan to rescue the dinosaurs off of Isla Nublar, noting they can save at least 11 species (but more if there's time). He also suggested recruiting Owen Grady for the mission, as he can help save Blue, the last living Velociraptor.[1]

The mercenaries under his employ initially cooperate with the Dinosaur Protection Group but betray them the moment Blue is found and captured. Mills has them left behind on the island to be left for prey by the erupting volcano, having outlived their usefulness and to eliminate witnesses. He was shown becoming increasingly aggressive towards Maisie Lockwood due to her always sneaking into his business. He also intended to use dinosaurs as a template for creating deadly bioweapons with help of Henry Wu.[1]

Before the auction begins, he contacts professional auctioneer Gunnar Eversol to help run it, who is initially reluctant due to the late arrival of the dinosaurs. Unknowingly, Maisie discovers this and tells Benjamin about it. Despite Benjamin initially brushing the information aside, he later reprimands Mills in his bedroom about selling off the dinosaurs instead of relocating them. While Benjamin orders Mills to call the police on himself for his action of betrayal, he instead smothers his master with a pillow to death, causing his amber cane to fall and shatter onto the ground.[1]

In the mansion's underground laboratory, Mills and Henry Wu discuss the newly created hybrid, the Indoraptor. Wu warns him that the Indoraptor is not a viable product as it is an unstable prototype; however, Mills refuses to listen to him. He and Ken Wheatley later confront a captured Owen and Claire in the manor's holding cells where he mocks their efforts to save the dinosaurs and not seeing the potential they hold as weapons. They are furious at being manipulated and almost killed by him, as well as disgusted by the fact that he only sees the helpless dinosaurs as money to be made. Mills tells Claire that both of them exploited dinosaurs, but he at least is willing to admit what he is doing. Owen at one point threatens to break Mills' arm by grabbing it through the bars, but Claire stops him only so that she can yank him face-first into the bars by his tie. Following this exchange, Mills implies that he doesn't intend to let either of them live, stating that, as far as the outside world is concerned, they both died on Isla Nublar when Mt. Sibo erupted.[1]

As the auction is under way, Mills and Henry both observe the auction taking place, with the former focusing on the millions generated by the event. At the auction's halfway point, Eversol decided to tease the weaponized hybrid, causing a rift between Mills and Wu. Despite Henry warning Mills about the dangers of selling the Indoraptor, Mills continued with the process after a bidder made a hefty bid of $20 million for the prototype. After the final bid, the Indoraptor was sold. But suddenly, Owen escaped with Stiggy the Stygimoloch by his side, which stalled and sabotaged the event, sending everyone into a panicking frenzy. Mills, shocked that Owen managed to escape and sabotaged the auction, ordered his men to try to have the Indoraptor delivered to the buyer, but Owen prevented it by reversing the track and stopping the cage. As Owen deactivated the circuitry wiring to the track, Mills fled the scene.[1]

Mills and his two men ran into Owen, Claire, and Maisie during his escape attempt. Furious over Owen and Claire spoiling his plans, he intends to kill them, but demanded them to hand over Maisie to him. When they refused, Mills cruelly revealed that Maisie is actually the clone of Lockwood's deceased daughter and the reason John Hammond and Lockwood ended their partnership was because Hammond never believed in human cloning. Before he can order his men to kill Owen and Claire and take Maisie, the Indoraptor blindsides the mercenaries and takes off with them, causing Mills to retreat.[1]

Carno eating eli

Mills eaten by Rexy and a Carnotaurus.

Accompanied by two mercenaries with Mills holding the Indominus rex DNA sample, he attempted to make his escape from the Lockwood Manor with the intention of continuing the hybrid program. However, he was soon to learn the hard way that tangling with nature was unwise. Before he could stash the capsule with the sample in it, a stampede occurred, involving multiple species freed from the holding cell that was ravaged by a gas leak. The mercenaries accompanying him are killed, and Mills seeks shelter under the vehicle, only for it to be wrecked by the stampede. After the stapede passed, he tried to retrieve the Indominus sample, only to be ambushed by Rexy, which grabs him with its mouth and crushes him between its jaws. As Mills screams in pain and terror and pounds at the her lower jaw, he is finally killed when Rexy delivers one final crunch, separating his legs from the rest of his body. Then, a Carnotaurus then appears and snatches Mills' severed leg. Rexy then scares the Carnotaurus away by headbutting it, causing it to drop Mills' leftover leg, which then attracted several Compsognathus. Rexy devours Mills alone and roars in triumphant victory.[1]

After devouring Mills, Rexy tramples the Indominus DNA samples, crushing it, and carelessly fleeing into the wilderness, ensuring an end to all future hybrids once and for all. Ironically, Mills himself built a massive fortune with the auction, but doesn't get to spend a penny of it where he's going in the wake of his demise.[1]

Relationships[]

Benjamin Lockwood[]

Benjamin hired Eli because he wanted someone young and idealistic to bring his company into the future. It isn't known if Eli was always going behind his back concerning the dinosaurs, but Benjamin looked legitimately upset when he found out what was really going on. When Mills needed to, he killed Lockwood, telling him, "John Hammond was right. It was an unholy thing that you did. I'm not the only guilty one here, am I, sir?"[1]

Iris Carroll[]

Iris and Eli seem to have a basic level of respect for each other, even if he has authority over her, telling her to lock Maisie in her room. However, after Benjamin's death, he seemed to grow fed up with her when she wanted to look after Maisie.[1]

Maisie Lockwood[]

Eli seemed to act as a father figure for Maisie during most of her life. Until she started to see his true nature and finally after finding her again, he revealed she was a clone of Lockwood's daughter Charlotte. Presumably, he wanted her as he saw her the same way he wanted the dinosaurs. They were both major advancements in cloning technology that could both benefit him.[1]

Owen Grady[]

Owen wasn't aware of Mills' existence until he was captured by him. Owen instantly disliked him and attempted to break his arm before being told not to by Claire Dearing. The two loathed each other afterwards, especially after Owen caused Stiggy to crash his auction. Eli got his men to aim guns at him and Claire before they were interrupted by the Indoraptor. [1]

Claire Dearing[]

Claire and Eli had met nearly a decade before the events of Fallen Kingdom. Interestingly, they seemed to have been good friends, though whilst this could be the young idealistic Dearing from the book The Evolution of Claire (though she never mentions him in the book), it could have also been the cold businesswoman from Jurassic World, both of which Eli could have easily gotten along with. In Fallen Kingdom, the two briefly bond over their shared enthusiasm over saving the dinosaurs. When Wheatley captures Claire and Owen, however, she tries to attack him and says that he is a monster. Eli reminds her that she also authorized the creation of the Indominus rex, exploiting a creature in a cage for a profit. She does slam him into a metal bar, however, and he later orders his men to aim guns at them before the Indoraptor intervened.[1]

Ken Wheatley[]

Eli hired Wheatley to wrangle the dinosaurs. Despite this, Ken goes above the call of duty and captures Claire and Owen for him, aiming a gun at anyone who threatens him. However, this is only revealed to be because Wheatley wants his bonus from Mills, even going into the clearly destroyed auction to look for him.[1]

Henry Wu[]

Mills hired Wu after the events of Jurassic World. Despite Wu making him his hybrid dinosaur, Mills constantly looks down on Wu, not understanding the complexity of the job, while Wu looks at him as a weakling and idiot with no vision or spine whatsoever. The two got in a fierce argument over Blue, which ends with Mills asking Wu if he can do it. Wu says he can, and Eli tells him to go away and just do it. In his final moments, he took the Indominus' rib from Wu's lab and attempted to flee with it.[1]

Gunnar Eversoll[]

Eversoll and Mills made a deal that said that they would auction the dinosaurs. The two bickered a bit, but when it became clear how much money the auction would make, the two grew closer and even agreed to sell the Indoraptor prototype before Stiggy interrupted the auction. The two were separated and Gunnar was killed before Eli was.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Mills' death is noticeably similar to the death of Eddie Carr from The Lost World: Jurassic Park (being killed by a large carnivorous theropod and ripped in half by two of them).
  • Mills was the third human in the franchise (after Lewis Dodgson and Billy Yoder, & before Danny Nedermeyer) who tried to kill another human with his bare hands. However, unlike Yoder or Danny, Mills was successful. That makes him the second human in the franchise to succeed at killing another human being, the first being Dodgson.
  • Mills is the sixth or seventh person to be killed by Rexy, with the first being Donald Gennaro from the original Jurassic Park, the second being Billy Yoder from Jurassic Park: The Game. The third will be Nima Cruz from the same game, but only if the player choose to let Nima get eaten in order to try to save Dennis Nedry's Barbasol can with dinosaur embryos instead for helping an another character. The fourth or fifth person to be eaten by the T. rex before Mills will be the poacher Mitch from the series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. Rexy later also devoured one of Mills' mercenaries Hansen during the I. rex Specimen Retrieval in the third season of Camp Cretaceous as her fifth or sixth human victim.
    • Interestingly, both men were businessmen (Gennaro a lawyer specifically) who were characterized as villainous for their love of money and profiting off of the dinosaurs.
    • Mills' leg falling out of Rexy's mouth is a reference to the goat from the first film, whose leg landed on the car Alexis Murphy was in.
  • Mills was meant to be both a more realistic portrayal to how people like Peter Ludlow often behave in real-life and a cinematic adaptation to the novel version of Lewis Dodgson. However, while his first meta symbolism stayed relevant, the second meta symbolism became moot when Dodgson came back in Jurassic World: Dominion.
  • Mills was the main antagonist of the first half of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and the secondary antagonist of the last half when The Indoraptor took over as the main antagonist instead.
