In Jurassic Park III, a Spinosaurus strands the film's main characters on Isla Sorna by causing their plane to crash. Afterwards, the characters escape, only to bump into a bull Tyrannosaurus rex, who is eating a Parasaurolophus. Unmoving, Dr. Grant tells the group to not move a muscle. The T. rex roared at the group, causing them to run away, with Dr. Grant trailing behind and the Tyrannosaurus chasing them. The T. rex chased them into the clearing where the Spinosaurus, having finally caught up, was waiting. The group managed to find a safe place to hide, but Dr. Grant fell and found himself stuck in a ditch between two fallen logs.

The Spinosaurus roared at the Tyrannosaurus aggressively, while the Tyrannosaurus gave a loud bellow in return. The T. rex almost crushed Dr.Grant under his foot, but the logs combined with the ditch held strong enough and saved Dr.Grant from being crushed. At first, the male Tyrannosaurus had the upper hand of the fight, able to grab onto the Spinosaurus neck and bite deep into it and shove it to the forest floor. After regaining its focus, the Spinosaurus freed itself from the T. rex jaws, after knocking down a tree which nearly crushed Amanda and Paul Kirby.

The Spinosaurus roared and snapped at the Tyrannosaurus which was backing up, roaring back. The two predators bit and snapped at each others flanks, and the Tyrannosaurus managed to charge at the Spinosaurus, pushing it forward. The Spinosaurus recovered quickly from the blow and managed to out-maneuver the Tyrannosaurus and bite deep into his neck. Bellowing in pain, the T. rex groaned out in agony as the Spinosaurus gripped his neck with it’s arms and snapped the rival dinosaur’s neck, killing him instantly. As Dr. Grant managed to escape, he was almost crushed again as the freshly-killed Tyrannosaurus body tumbled to the ground, and the Spinosaurus placed it’s claws on the belly and watches as the group manages to flee, giving out a deafening roar.

T. rex and Spinosaurus size comparison.

The T. rex was the main dinosaur during the two previous movies. This fostered the common misconception among the general public that the T. rex was the largest carnivorous dinosaur. By 2001 it was known that theropods like Carcharodontosaurus, Giganotosaurus, and Spinosaurus were larger than the Tyrannosaurus, but the general public was oblivious to this. Dr. Jack Horner decided to replace Tyrannosaurus rex by the Spinosaurus because ” Spinosaurus was and is the biggest meat eating dinosaur that ever lived.”[1]

Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus lived on different continents and different eras. So, the fossil record can not give a definitive answer on which species would win in a battle. It is unknown if Spinosaurus was a better fighter than Tyrannosaurus. Jack Horner explained: “We don't know how ferocious any dinosaur really was, all we have are their skeletons. If you scale the ferocious factor on the length of the animal, there was nothing that ever lived on this planet that could match [Spinosaurus]. My hypothesis is that T. rex was actually a scavenger rather than a killer. Spinosaurus was really the predatory animal."[1]

Real Spinosaurus

The real Spinosaurus.

In 2014 Dr. Nizar Ibrahim and Dr. Paul Sereno presented evidence that indicated that Spinosaurus was not a land animal. This was a creature adapted to life in the water, floating like a crocodile with paddle-like feet. On land the Spinosaurus had walked on four legs.[2] Therefore, if Spinosaurus would fight with other large predators, the battle look very different from the one in the movie.

Paul Sereno said that when Spinosaurus emerged on land, it probably didn't brawl with other predators. "Big predators would likely have stayed away from fighting each other," Ibrahim says. "Whichever one got in the first big bite would have probably won a fight."[2] In the film it is the Tyrannosaurus that got the first big bite and should have won the fight. Moreover, with a bite force of 3.5-6.5 metric tons[3] the T. rex should have bitten the Spinosaurus head off.

In 2020, it was revealed that Spinosaurus possessed a paddle-like tail.
