Alexis "Lex" Murphy is John Hammond's granddaughter and Tim's sister, who accompanied the endorsement team on the tour as a gift due to her parents getting a divorce.[1]

Her novel and film version are very different, with a number of her traits being given to her brother and vice-versa. Being John Hammond's granddaughter, she is second-generation Scottish-American.

Jurassic Park[]

In the movie, the roles of Tim and Lex were partly reversed; Lex is now the older sibling and is given Tim's computer hacking skills, while Tim is the younger sibling but keeps the same fascination for dinosaurs. Throughout the film, Lex wears a tank top decorated with multicolored spiral shapes, trousers, and a blue baseball cap. She is portrayed by Ariana Richards, who was 12 years old at that time. She along with Tim are first seen when they happily greet their grandfather as he brings the other guests down to take the tour car from the park.

Lex joins the main party on their trip through the park in the automated Explorers; riding in a car with her brother Tim and the lawyer, Donald Gennaro. She expresses alarm and shock when the command center tries to lure out the Tyrannosaurus rex with a live goat. When Gennaro sarcastically asks her why this bothers her, she retorts that she is a vegetarian. She is present with the main group when they encounter the sick Triceratops.

When the group becomes stranded at the Tyrannosaurus rex enclosure due to Nedry's sabotage, the group begins to feel tremors. Gennaro wonders if maybe it is the power trying to come back on while Tim surveys the enclosure with nightvision goggles. The group then realizes the goat from earlier is missing, with Lex asking what happened to it. Moments later, part of the goat falls on the sunroofer of her, Tim's and Gennaro's Explorer, with the now revealed Tyrannosaurus rex in the process of eating it. The party then realizes to their horror that the electrified fences are down as the Tyrannosaurus rex rakes them its claws.

Lex has very good computer skills and is a proficient computer hacker and is impressed by the interface the car had for the tourists. She was able to get Jurassic Park back online and the phones and the locks working again. She is initially shown to be optimistic and enthusiastic at the beginning of the first film and has an understandably juvenile personality. Though liked by Dr. Sattler, she is shown to be disliked by Dr. Grant, owing to his general dislike of children including her brother Tim, though he warms up to the Murphy children over the course of their survival in the Park. Lex is last seen sleeping against Grant's side as the group escapes Isla Nublar by N293G.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (film)[]

Lex and Tim only appear in one scene of this film, when the disgraced Ian Malcolm comes to visit John Hammond in New York. They are concerned about their grandfather's declining health, as well as the hostile takeover of InGen by Hammond's nephew Peter Ludlow.

Lex has not appeared in any subsequent films.

Games[]

LEGO Jurassic World[]

Lego Jurassic World Video Game Lex Murphy

Lex Murphy from LEGO Jurassic World.

Lex Murphy is a playable character in LEGO Jurassic World. In the game, she has four abilities. Like most female characters in the game she possesses the Agile ability, allowing her to leap higher than male characters and can use special pink/blue objects to access new areas. Her Hacker ability allows her to access computer terminals to manipulate objects and in the game's retelling of the events of the 1st film, she uses this ability to restore power to the park. She also has the unique ability to throw baseballs as a ranged weapon which she can use to hit LEGO bulls-eye target, switches, or enemies. Using her Scream ability she can shatter LEGO glass by screaming loudly. She has two playable costumes, her initial outfit and baseball cap from the beginning of the first film and her "Survivor" outfit (her cap-less damaged and dirty outfit) from the end of the first film. Her standard character model and voice is also used as the default for the customizable character slot, Custom C. Interestingly despite Lex's cap appearing on the default of Custom slot C, it disappears if the slot is customized as her cap (complete with hair) does not appear as a customization option.

Comic books[]

Lex and her brother, now adults, are two of the primary characters in the comic book series Jurassic Park: Redemption. Lex's vegetarianism from the first film is extrapolated. Lex is now the CEO of LexxCrop, a company that produces organic crops. Lex's dislike of dinosaurs have only grown worse since the events of the park disaster, referring to them as the most savage and dangerous creatures on the planet.

Manga[]

Lex and her brother appear in the manga Jurassic Park.
