Microceratus is an extinct genus of small ceratopsian dinosaur that lived in the Cretaceous period in Asia. It would have used its sharp beak to bite off the leaves or needles. In the first Jurassic Park novel, they spend most of their time in the trees.

It became known as Microceratops when it was first discovered in 1953, but that name was already occupied by a wasp with the same name. The replacement name Microceratus was created by Mateus in 2008 for the type specimen.

Creation[]

Microherd

A herd of Microceratus.

By 1986, at least one Microceratus was created on Isla Sorna for the original Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar. This Microceratus had an oversized head, with an upward oriented frill and eyes further up the skull than its fossil counterpart. At least two different color variations are known in this clone, one being blue, one with a yellow underbelly and a spotted pattern across its body and small stripes on its back. The other has a red and yellow head that leads into a green body and which turns into blue on the limbs and tails. and large, horizontal stripes running down its body. Both variants had solid stripes running down their legs and tail without the pattern on their bodies. By 1993, this population had grown to 22 individuals,[1] but were released later that year during Hurricane Clarissa. It is unknown if there were any surviving populations by the 1997 incident.

Microceratus was successfully recreated by InGen for Masrani Global Corporation's new dinosaur park, Jurassic World.[2] Their skin color on the website came in olive, dark red, turquoise, or all of the above. Each individual had at least one or all of these colors arranged in a unique pattern, though its true appearance in the park is unknown. They seem to be able to swap between being a quadruped and a biped on the painting. They grew a foot longer than the original dinosaur and weighed 10 more pounds. They had low intelligence and would mistake litter of park visitors for food.[3] It lives in the Cretaceous Cruise and is possibly the second smallest dinosaur in Jurassic World, second only to Compsognathus.[2]

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom[]

After the Jurassic World Incident, populations of Microceratus populations survived on Isla Nublar, favoring the foothills surrounding Mount Sibo, which left them and other species on a critical exposure list when Mount Sibo threatened to erupt.[4]

By 2018, Microceratus were subject to cruelty, according to a poster published by the DPG. It was also one of the species taken to the manor, although it is unknown if they were auctioned off.

Jurassic World: Dominion[]

By 2022, it is revealed that some Microceratus were taken to the Lockwood Manor by 2018. At least three Microceratus were kept in the Amber Clave Night Market in Malta, but it is unknown what happened to them after the market fell into chaos during a French Intelligence raid. It is possible that they now reside in the wild and probably in the international sanctuary of Biosyn after its collapse. Later that day at the Biosyn Research Facility, Dr. Henry Wu showed Maisie Lockwood a video of her mother as a child admiring a Microceratus back when she lived on Isla Sorna.

Microstoryboard

Microceratus in the Jurassic World storyboard.

In the Jurassic World storyboard, Microceratus was supposed to live in the Gentle Giants Petting Zoo. They were also shown to be a bit aggressive, as show in the storyboard when they are seen jumping at a man's face, who was protected by the glass window.[6]

The icon for Microceratus seen on the Holoscape and the Jurassic World website comes from a size diagram of Microceratus from the website DinoPit.

Microceratus is one of the few dinosaurs in the franchise to be portrayed entirely by animatronics, the other being Dilophosaurus.
