Theropods meaning "beast feet" are a group of bipedal dinosaurs. Although they were primarily carnivorous, a number of theropod families evolved herbivory during the Cretaceous Period. Theropods first appeared during the Carnian age of the Late Triassic about 230 million years ago and were the sole large terrestrial carnivores from the Early Jurassic until the close of the Cretaceous, about 66 million years ago. Today, they are represented by the 9,300 living species of birds, which evolved in the Late Jurassic from small specialized coelurosaurian dinosaurs.

Link to birds[]

Among the features linking theropods to birds are the three-toed foot, a furcula (wishbone), air-filled bones and (in some cases) feathers and brooding of the eggs. This is touched down on in the first Jurassic Park during the scene at the digsite.

Jurassic Park franchise[]

Several types of theropods are the main antagonists of the Jurassic Park series that are often the killers of the people. Other more neutral or harmless theropods also appear.

The theropods in the films are Spinosaurus, Tyrannosaurus rex, Velociraptor, Compsognathus, Carnotaurus, Baryonyx, AllosaurusIndoraptorIndominus rex, Dilophosaurus, Gallimimus, and Ceratosaurus.

The theropods in the novels are T. rex, Velociraptor, Dilophosaurus, Ornitholestes, Carnotaurus, Coelurus, and Procompsognathus.

The games have uncountable theropods.
