Timothy "Tim" Murphy was the grandson of John Hammond who was invited to Jurassic Park because his parents were going through a divorce. In the film, some of his characteristics were swapped from the novel, with those of his sister Lex Murphy.

In the film, Tim's personalty was a young rambunctious kid who was seen as annoying by Alan grant because he when they were traveling to the car he kept talking about many theories as to what happened to the dinosaurs.
Tim was often injured or the subject of abuse. When the t-rex attacked the car it shoved it off a cliff into a tree with Tim still inside. This startled Tim so much he threw up. Another scene was when Tim was shocked and nearly killed by a fence when the power came on but Grant managed to revive him.

In Jurassic Park's sequel film, he and Lex Murphy are shown briefly. He and his sister voted no in the poll to rebuild Jurassic Park, as stated by Peter Ludlow in the film. To increase his chances to rebuild the park, Ludlow said to leave them out of the choice, because "It's not a game".
